A word from the creative director and founder

My whole process towards creating garments is based upon a longer-term commitment to living with purpose and intentionality. My focus is on fostering deep, authentic and long lasting connections.

I believe that if we have a meaningful connection with the people who make our clothes then we in turn hold a deeper connection to the cloth itself and are more likely to look for ways to care for our clothing and this way we will lighten the load on this beautiful planet.

My work is deeply narrative and so my starting point for a new collection always begins with a story that I want to further investigate. I use autobiographical experiences alongside shared stories that connect us. The visual representation of this research develops through constant mark making experimentation and an openness to the process of making.

Soft fibres such as cotton, linen and silk feature in my work along with pre- and post-production fabrics. I also love to re-appreciate found garment pieces along with embroidery samples, found lace fragments and the little gems of cloth discovered on my travels.

Many of the pieces I create are unique garments that hold an inherently deep meaning for individual clients and therefore their value is recognised and respected. People who buy a piece of Melaleuca Rise clothing are already emotionally engaged with the work, seeking a connection to the cloth and the narrative of each piece rather than buying a piece of clothing that can be seasonally replaced.

All my work comes with a ‘care to repair’ gift that helps clients to find ways to look after their loved clothes.

All pieces are designed, cut and stitched in our Melaleuca Rise Studio

      Some questions you may have

Can I try on any of the collection pieces?

Absolutely. You can arrange an appointment to visit the Melaleuca Rise studio or if you live locally I can organise a time to visit you in your own home with a selection of our pieces. If you live further afield then it is best to set up an online chat and we can go through the exact sizing of the garment you have selected to make sure it will feel wonderful on you. I am happy to make small adjustments such as hem length and sleeve length. Any other adjustments would require an individual consultation session.

Can you help me to design my own piece of clothing?

Yeh totally. I can work with you to develop a design for a special occasion piece or an everyday item of clothing. Each item is individually priced to suit your budget. It is an exciting and rewarding process to have a garment made for your exact body type rather than trying to fit into a standard clothing size that is nothing but a random configuration to make pattern drafting easier! .

I really would like to make my own clothes can you teach me?

I have over two decades of teaching experience and am passionate about helping people to find their creativity within the joy of making. Classes are tailored to suit small groups or one-to-one lessons. Workshop sessions include pattern drafting, basic sewing skills, garment construction, mending techniques, screen-printing, subtraction cutting and a whole lot more,

Are you able to do sample runs?

There are occasionally quiet times when I am happy to take on sample runs for other sustainable fashion brands. If you need it done super quick I'm not the right person as I like to take my time and make sure your samples are made to the highest standard and then I can help you to create the best garment possible for your brand.

Why are there art pieces in your shop?

I work both as an interdisciplinary artist and as a designer and both of these ways of approaching my work feed into each other. I hummed and harred about adding my artwork to the Melaleuca Rise shop and then realised it just made sense to share everything in one place. Yeh I know all the marketing rules about focus and clarity for your customers but my people don't want to live in boxes defined by someone else's rules!

Do you exhibit your work? Where can I see more of what you do in the physical world?

It is such a privilege for me to share my work in a physical space and I really appreciate the commitment in time that it takes to visit an exhibition. I have all the information about upcoming exhibitions on my artist website https://janeziemons/com and at https://instagram.com/janeziemons. If you would like to come along but are nervous attending by yourself please get in touch and I can meet you outside the venue. It takes courage to experience art, to be vulnerable and learn something new about ourselves and the world so please reach out if this is challenging for you so that I can be there to support you.
